Tell us more about your business and how you got into it.
After several successful years working in corporate America, I had a minor epiphany. Gone was the attraction to titles, salary increases, and promotions. What I didn't know, however, was what the heck was I going to do next? A fortuitus coffee meeting with a good friend changed everything. He helped me remember dozens of specific times (dots) during my professional career when I felt the most alive and the most motivated. As he shared, "When you connect your dots, Tim, you'll find your thread. You might as well do it and get paid for it, because you're going to find a way to do it anyway. Oh, and there's an industry that actually does it: coaching." It was at that moment I decided to formalize my career path, earn a Certified Professional Coach designation, and launch my coaching practice, Coaching Dean. Eight and a half years later, I continue to feel alive and motivated when I get to partner with clients and help them to realize their true potential. At Coaching Dean, we empower you to take control of your future and start living the life you want to live. We address all core areas of your life (Career, Relationships, Finances, Health, Personal, & Lifestyle) to ensure progress and holistic, tangible results.
What is the current state of affairs where you work? (Yes, this is general, but this is a place for you to set the stage for our understanding of who you are to your industry or workplace.)
As a business owner, I work from home and conduct coaching sessions via face-to-face, video conference (Zoom or Skype), or via phone calls. Each client gets to choose their preferred modality.
What do you see happening in your industry or workplace in the next 30/60/90 days? What about in the long-term: one year, five years, 10 years?
Over the last 20 years, the coaching industry has evolved from a negative, career-probation intervention to a positive, career-advancement differentiator. The industry will only expand as more professionals experience the benefits of partnering with a coach who helps keep them focused, directed, and accountable.
What is a "best practice" that you have developed in response to the challenges presented by COVID-19? This should ideally be in relation to work in general or your work in specific. It can be grand or minute—both are great.
For me, several clients barely noticed the difference of me physically relocating to Las Vegas, given many were already using Zoom for their coaching engagements. One area I have noticed in general: Many people have used the pandemic's 'down time' at home to reassess and reevaluate their professional career path.
Who is someone you think has been doing something positive, helpful, crucial, or impactful in your industry or workplace? What is it they have contributed?
The global coaching industry's gold standard is the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
What is something that the general public perhaps does not understand about operating in your industry at this moment?
Coaching, when done correctly and authentically, is uniquely the only discipline that is one way. When you partner with a consultant, advisor, mentor, etc., they are the expert and the process mirrors a two-way, give and take engagement. When you partner with a coach, YOU are the expert. Always. The engagement is one way: all about you.
